Overview

What is Hyaluronidase?

Hyaluronidase is a soluble protein enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, the primary component of most modern dermal fillers. When injected into an area previously treated with an HA filler, hyaluronidase cleaves the glycosidic bonds holding the filler molecules together, causing the gel to rapidly dissolve and be safely absorbed by the body.

At Allen Medical Aesthetics, we exclusively use Hylenex recombinant (hyaluronidase human injection), the only FDA-approved recombinant human hyaluronidase. Because Hylenex is a highly purified, human-derived enzyme rather than an animal-derived product, it carries a significantly lower risk of allergic reactions and provides highly predictable, consistent dissolution of unwanted filler.

Whether you are experiencing filler migration (such as a "filler mustache" above the lip), noticeable lumps, the Tyndall effect (a bluish hue under the skin), or simply desire a fresh start after years of layering injectables, our aesthetic nurses provide expert assessment and precise, targeted dissolution.

FDA-Approved Hylenex We use Hylenex recombinant, a preservative-free, highly purified human hyaluronidase that offers superior safety and efficacy compared to animal-derived alternatives.
Targeted Correction Hyaluronidase can be used to completely dissolve all filler in an area for a "blank slate," or it can be micro-dosed to subtly adjust minor asymmetries or small lumps.
Rapid Results The enzymatic breakdown of hyaluronic acid begins immediately upon injection. While post-treatment swelling is common, the actual dissolution process is largely complete within 24 to 48 hours.
How It Works

How HA Filler Dissolving Works

A filler dissolution appointment at Allen Medical Aesthetics is handled with the utmost care and clinical precision. We understand that correcting previous filler work can be stressful, and our goal is to provide a safe, comfortable, and transparent experience.

01

Consultation and Assessment

Your provider will thoroughly evaluate the area of concern, review your treatment history (including the type and volume of filler previously used, if known), and discuss your goals. We will determine if complete dissolution or a targeted adjustment is the best approach.

02

Preparation and Comfort

Because the dissolution process can cause mild discomfort, we may apply a topical numbing cream or reconstitute the Hylenex with lidocaine to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

03

Precise Injection

Using a fine needle, your provider will carefully inject the Hylenex solution directly into the unwanted filler. The enzyme immediately begins to hydrolyze the cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel, breaking it down into smaller molecules that your body naturally clears away.

04

Post-Treatment Guidelines

You can expect localized swelling, redness, and potential bruising at the injection sites. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive heat, and alcohol for 24 hours to minimize bruising.

05

Results and Next Steps

The filler will noticeably decrease within the first few hours, with final results visible after 48 hours once the procedural swelling subsides. If you plan to have the area re-treated with new filler, we require a waiting period of at least two weeks.

Conditions Treated

Treatment Areas and Conditions Treated

Hylenex can safely dissolve any hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler (such as Juvederm, Restylane, Revanesse, or Belotero). It cannot dissolve biostimulatory fillers like Sculptra or Radiesse.

  • Filler migration: filler that has moved from its original placement, commonly seen above the upper lip or under the eyes
  • Overfilling: an unnatural, overly augmented, or "puffy" appearance due to excessive filler volume
  • Asymmetry or lumps: uneven results or palpable nodules that have not resolved with massage
  • Tyndall effect: a bluish discoloration visible through the skin when filler is placed too superficially
  • Delayed-onset nodules: hard lumps or swelling that appear weeks or months after the initial injection
  • Vascular complications: in rare emergency situations where filler compromises blood flow, high-dose hyaluronidase is the standard of care

What to Expect

What to Expect After Treatment

The process of dissolving filler involves a localized inflammatory response as the body clears the broken-down hyaluronic acid. Swelling is the most common side effect and is entirely normal. The area may look temporarily more swollen than it did before the treatment, but this typically subsides within 24 to 48 hours.

Because Hylenex is an enzyme, its active half-life in the tissue is very short. However, the clinical results, the absence of the unwanted filler, are permanent. If the original filler was heavily cross-linked or present in large volumes, a second dissolution session may be required.

If your goal is to refill the area to achieve a better aesthetic outcome, patience is key. We require a minimum of two weeks between dissolving and retreating to ensure all procedural swelling has resolved and the hyaluronidase enzyme has completely cleared from the area.

Day 1

Immediate swelling, mild redness, and possible bruising at the injection sites. The area may feel tender. The filler will begin to feel softer as the enzyme works.

Days 2-3

Swelling significantly decreases. You will notice a marked reduction in the volume of the unwanted filler.

Days 7-14

All residual swelling and bruising resolve. The final result of the dissolution is visible. The tissue has returned to its natural state.

Week 2+

The area is now ready to be safely re-evaluated and, if desired, re-treated with new dermal filler using proper techniques and placement.

FAQ

Common Questions About HA Filler Dissolve

Does dissolving filler hurt?

The injection of hyaluronidase can cause a brief stinging or burning sensation. To maximize your comfort, we often reconstitute the Hylenex with lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and may apply a topical numbing cream prior to the procedure.

Will hyaluronidase dissolve my natural hyaluronic acid?

While hyaluronidase does temporarily break down native hyaluronic acid in the surrounding tissue, your body naturally regenerates its own HA very rapidly, typically within 15 to 20 hours. There is no long-term damage to your natural tissue or skin structure.

Can all fillers be dissolved?

No. Hyaluronidase only works on hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, and RHA. It cannot dissolve biostimulatory fillers like Sculptra, Radiesse, or Bellafill, nor can it dissolve permanent fillers or fat transfers.

How soon can I get new filler after dissolving?

We require a strict two-week waiting period before injecting new filler into the dissolved area. This allows all swelling to subside and ensures the hyaluronidase enzyme is no longer active, which could prematurely break down the new filler.

Is there a risk of an allergic reaction?

Allergic reactions to hyaluronidase are rare, especially with the highly purified, human recombinant Hylenex we use at Allen Medical Aesthetics. Animal-derived hyaluronidase carries a slightly higher risk. If you have a history of severe allergies, particularly to bee or wasp stings, please inform your provider during the consultation.

How much does it cost to dissolve filler?

The cost depends on the amount of Hylenex required, which varies based on the volume, type, and location of the filler being dissolved. Pricing will be discussed during your consultation once your provider has assessed the area.
